Transcript: HedgesNeatly trimmed formal hedges and topiary styles provide a nice formal look to the landscape, yet they require quite a bit of work. They tend to outgrow themselves very quickly, getting long gangly shoots coming out, making them look shaggy, and you’re back in trimming them again to keep that neat, tight, formal look. However, if you want to have a hedge, one of the keys to success is to trim it often. You want to be sure to keep it trimmed back to the same plain in order to maintain a dark, dense hedge. A second thing you want to keep in mind is you want to keep the top more narrow than the base; light needs to reach all portions of the hedge. Over time, the hedge tends to grow top heavy. As a result, you have good foliage coverage on the top portions, but down below it’s shaded out and begins to thin out. You can see through the hedge. Now perhaps you planted this hedge so you don’t have to look at your neighbor’s used car lot next door. When you lose foliage, you start to lose the effectiveness of the hedge. You want to keep the top narrow so light reaches all portions of the hedge and, as a result, it will stay nice and dense no matter how tall it gets. With your common sense tip on maintaining a dense hedge for privacy and to block an unsightly view, I’m Skip Richter. download
