Transcript: OrchidsThere’s nothing that provides that exotic topical indoor beauty like orchids. A lot of people think orchids are difficult to grow and don’t even attempt it, but they can be quite easy to grow. One type of orchid, the phalaenopsis, or moth orchid, adapts very well to our indoor environment. They can take the lower light levels we have in our home as well as our normal temperatures inside the house and do quite well. The secret to success with moth orchids is in the fall, when it’s about 55 to 60 degrees, take them outside for a couple of weeks; that cool temperature helps them initiate a bloom spike. Then bring them in before the freezing temperatures arrive and soon you’ll have a bloom that provides up to two months of beauty inside. They’re easy to care for. Take a dilute house plant fertilizer; water them periodically to keep their very chunky well-drained mix a little bit moist, and they’ll provide blooms for you and continue to grow year after year. With your common sense easy-to-grow orchid tip, I’m Skip Richter. download
