Transcript: Planting Trees and Shrubs

Early spring is a great time to plant new shrubs and trees in the landscape. In late winter, bare root plants are a good economical choice, but once the weather warms up for spring, you want to go with ball and burlap or container-grown plants because they’re just able to survive better having not lost much of their root system.

When you get a new plant, you want to tilt it over and slide the root ball out of the container to check the roots. Sometimes plants spend too much time in the container before being bumped up into a larger size and you get these roots that are encircling the container. It’s a good idea to tease them out and perhaps dig the hole large enough to accommodate the root or cut the root off to fit the hole. Don’t just wrap them around in the container because they’re not going to straighten out underground, and in time, as the stem of the plant and the root grow, it can actually strangle or gurgle the plant.

You want to plant it at the same depth that it was in the container. Don’t dig the hole too deep, or when you fill it with soil it’s just going to settle over time. When you finish planting it, you want to make sure you water it in well and provide a little mulch to cover the surface of the soil, and they’ll be off to a good start for years of pleasure and adding to the value of your landscape.

With your common sense tree planting tip, I’m Skip Richter.
