Transcript: Tips for Hanging BasketsHanging baskets provide a great way to add color and interest to our summer landscapes here in Texas. One of my favorites are the ferns. There are many types of ferns, the Boston fern, fishtail fern and others, that do well in the hanging basket. You just want to keep them moist and out of the direct sunlight. They like a bright shade, so I like to use them among the eaves of the house or perhaps out under the trees on long hangers where they can dangle out there in the yard and look good. They love that shady location, kind of like me hanging in a hammock under a tree on a hot summer day, these ferns really thrive in our Texas heat, as long as you provide them moisture and a little shade. Then there are the color plants, things like the petunia, for example. Lots of new varieties to choose from. The wave series is a vining type of petunia, comes in many colors and does well. Then there's our own Texas vip and Laura bush which also do well in a container and bloom right through summer never blinking an eye. Never gets too hot for them as long as you provide water. They do need more light though, so don't hang these in the shade. Get them out in a sunny location Now a lot of folks like to grow geraniums. Geraniums do well here. But when it heats up, they just can't take our heat. So you want to move them to a spot that's bright and shady. Hanging baskets provide a great way to do that. Hang them in a shady spot where they get good light and your geraniums will continue to thrive and do well. And in a container like this, they have excellent drainage. With your common sense hanging basket tip, I'm Skip Richter. download
