Transcript: Container Herbs

Herbs are popular gardening plants. Not only are they easy to grow, they do well in containers. A terracotta pot such as this is a great place for growing herbs.

Any container at least a gallon in size is good. If you can get up to about two gallons, that's even better. I like these strawberry pots because you can tuck various types of herbs around the container, or a large planter like this works quite well.

You want to choose a container that has a drainage hole so excess moisture can drain away. Get a catch pan so when you water it you can catch the extra water. And then select a few herbs that will do quite well in that location.

You can begin with a taller herb such as this rosemary for the centerpiece of the planter. And then fill in around it with smaller herbs or trailing herbs. This oregano works really well. It will actually spill over the sides of the container.

Thyme is another good herb that works well. You just fill in around the container with a little potting soil. You don't have to press it down real hard.

And as easy as that, you've got a mini herb garden ready to go to the window sill or perhaps a sunny back porch. Just trim them off as you need them for cooking. It's a great way to spice up a soup.
