Transcript: Tip Layering Roses

Do you have a favorite rose bush that you would like to propagate? One of the easiest ways is to make additional roses out of a single bush is to use tip layering. Now, you can take cuttings and root them, but the chances of success are a little less. With tip layering, it's almost 100 percent.

You start by selecting a lower-lying branch such as this one. You want it to be able to bend down because you're going to bury it underneath the soil. Remove the mulch at the surface, and take out a small bit of soil -- just enough to get the stem under the edge. Then you want to crack the stem. You don't want to break it in two, just bend it until it cracks. Place it down in the hole, and use a bent coat hanger or some other piece of wire to secure it firmly down in the hole. Then place soil over it, press it in firmly and cover it with mulch. You want to leave it for about 4 weeks and that will give it time to start establishing some roots. It's going to take longer before the bush is able to survive on its own.

First of all, start off with good, strong, healthy plants. Avoid ones with a lot of spots on the leaves or wilting of the leaves. You want to plant African Violets using a special African violet mix. These are very porous and, while they hold some moisture, they also drain well. One of the principle problems with African Violets is soggy soil conditions that promote root and crown rots.

Once it's had a couple of months, it ought to be well-rooted and you can simply come in and cut the branch off from where it was attached to the mother plant. Then you can either dig it up or pot it up and move it to a new location. The best time to move a rose is in the fall so if you allow it to sit on through the summer, by fall it will be ready to go.

With your common sense tip on an easy and sure-fore way to propagate an old rose bush, I'm Skip Richter.
