Transcript: Composting

Great gardens begin with great soil. If you build your soil first, you can grow vegetables, flowers, fruit trees, even a lawn, much more successfully.

The reason this garden is so productive is, over time, we've built this soil with compost. Compost is really the miracle cure for all types of soil. It loosens the clay up allowing water to infiltrate rather than just run off the surface during a rain. It also helps clay soil drain internally a little bit better. It helps the sandy soil to hold moisture and nutrients during those long droughty spells we have here in Texas.

Compost is really just decomposed organic matter, something that was once alive and is now decomposing and releasing its nutrients back into the soil. In addition to helping the structure of soil, it also adds nutrients and stimulates the biological activity. Your plants will just love it. It's sort of like rocket fuel for your garden.

Compost is easy to add, just mix a few inches in each time you garden, and you'll see great results with your plants.

With your common sense gardening tip on building soil, I'm Skip Richter.
