Transcript: Spring Lawn Care

Hey, spring is here. And with spring, comes another lawn season. After you've mowed your turf grass about twice, it's growing fast enough to benefit from an application of nutrients.

St Augustine is normally an off-green color and that's it's healthy color. If you over fertilize, you can make it greener, but it will be shallower-rooted and be more susceptible to certain insect and disease problems.

You want to apply the right fertilizer. If you don't have a soil test to guide you, use a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio of product. For example, an 8-2-4 fertilizer would be that 4-1-2 ratio of nutrients.

Apply it strong enough to get about one half pound of nitrogen per 1000 square feet. You want to apply it with a spreader that puts it out evenly. There are two types of spreaders: one is the whirlybird, it spins around and sends the fertilizer out in all directions; the other is a drop spreader that drops it straight down. The whirlybird type tends to put on a more even application.

Also, if you put half your fertilizer going one way across your yard, and the other half crisscrossing the other way, you'll get a much more even application. And when you're done applying fertilizer, always sweep off your driveways and sidewalks. You bought that fertilzer to turn the lawn green, not the creek. So get your money's worth.

With your common sense tip for improving your lot in life, I'm Skip Richter.
