Transcript: Lawn Mowing

The single most-important thing we can do to have a beautiful lawn is to mow often. The more regularly you mow, the denser and attractive your turf grass will be.

To allow it to get really tall like this, and then to mow it down really short is stressful to the grass and leaves it with a brown unattractive appearance until it has time to re-green again.

Some turf -- the real high-quality turf like a golf course, for example -- might be mowed, in some cases, on the greens everyday in order to keep it attractive. Well, none of us have time for that kind of activity.

So if we can mow our lawns on about a 5 or 7 day schedule, that will keep them at their peak and also be practical for our busy schedules.

St Augustine grass needs be mowed at about a 3 inch height and then cut down to about 2 inches so you’re removing about a third of the leaf blade. With shorter statured grasses, such as hybrid bermuda and some zoysias, you may allow them to get up to about an inch and a half and then mow down to about one inch, but that’s going to require a more frequent schedule to keep that kind of turf.

Just keep in mind, the single most-important thing we do to have an attractive lawn, is to mow regularly.

With your common sense lawn care tip, I’m Skip Richter.
