Transcript: Colorful Hanging Baskets

Colorful baskets are a great way to bring color throughout your landscape . While small baskets are attractive, the large ones make an especially dramatic effect.

Most hanging baskets are going to be in the shade beneath a tree, and as such you want to choose plants that do well in the shade such as flowers like impatiens, or wishbone flower, also called terrinia, or perhaps a foiage plant like Koeleas.

I also like to use ivies hanging over the sides of the basket for a little bit of an added effect.

When you get into the sun, you can choose sun-loving flowers like boogainvilleas or perhaps petunias. Mix some flowers and colors in your basket and maybe include some foliage plants that are more upright for a more dramatic central appeal.

In addition to hanging baskets, we also have mounted planters. These are a great way to decorate a wall, and they also do well spilling over the side of a railing.

I like to use the types of baskets that use the coconut coir fiber lining. It's filled with potting soil in which you plant your plants . But with the coconut fiber, you can burrow a hole in the sides and plant plants in from all sides. So not only are plants coming out of the basket, they're actually spilling out from all sides. They help hold the moisture in too, that fiber sort of acts like a mulch so you're not having to water quite so often.
