Transcript: Compost Tea

You’ve probably heard of the value of compost in helping a garden grow well. Rich compost is full of nutrients and microbes that really stimulate your soil and benefit your plants.

Do you know you can also use your compost in a different way other than just mixing it into the soil? You can make compost tea. That’s right; brew your own at home.

You simply take some compost and place it in some kind of porous material. This row cover cloth works well. Cheese cloth also works well or you can use an old section of pantyhose as a tea bag.

Simply fill the hose or the bag with compost, and then place it in water and allow it to steep for about eight hours. That allows a lot of the nutrients to leak out of it as well as many of the microbes.

Once it’s steeped, you can dilute the compost down with water, and then apply it around the base of a plant to soak into the root system. It gives new transplants and established plants a quick boost.
