Transcript: Summer Water SavingsYou don't have to get very far into a long, hot Texas summer before those water bills begin to skyrocket. Let me show you a few devices that are very important and can save you money on your water bills. The first is a rain switch. If you've got an automatic system, this is a must. When ever it rains, it turns off your system automatically. Then a few days after the rain stops and it begins to dry out, it turns the system on again. You'll never have sprinklers running in the rain again. Another great device is a hose end controller. These are simply valves that turn on and off your hose. You can set them to come on and off at the right time. Some are even programmable so you can have them come on on a future day and turn off. Believe me, they'll save you money in the long run. If you've got a sprinkler system, you can convert it to drip quite easily. Sprinklers aren't as good a system because they waste water, it evaporates off the leaves and it also promotes disease every time you wet the foliage. You simply screw one of these on to the end of where the sprinkler would have been. In other words, remove the sprinkler head and put this cap on. It has several holes in the bottom. You attach a tube to these holes and each runs to a drip emitter somewhere in the bed. So what once was a sprinkler head is now drip irrigating about 12 spots around the landscape. Finally, there are drip irrigation kits. These attach to a hose end and you simply turn them on and, again, drip water right where it needs it, a very efficient system and an easy conversion that anyone can do. With your common sense tip on a few easy ways to save on your summer water bills, I'm Skip Richter. download
