Transcript: Turf Grass ChoicesWe have a lot of wonderful choices for turf grass here in Texas.St. Augustine is probably our most common and everyone’s familiar with it. It makes an excellent grass for the shade. It’s very shade tolerant and it’s tolerant, also, of an irregular mowing schedule. It doesn’t look so bad if you haven’t mowed for a while when you come back and mow. However, it is one that needs quite a bit of moisture, and in sunny spots you’re going to have to water it a lot. Zozia is a very drought-tolerant turf that does well in sun or in shade. It comes in two types. There are the broad-textured types like palisade or El Toro, and then there are the fine-textured types such as emerald that look like a Bermuda grass. Then there’s the hybrid Bermudas, similar to a golf course fairway. They do quite well if you mow them regularly, they continue to look good. Fairly drought tolerant but you need to feed them regularly and mow them regularly in order for them to do their best. And then finally, there are the buffalo grasses. These are native to the high plains and plains of Texas. They’re very drought tolerant, but you need to keep in mind that if you get a lot of water, or you’re in eastern parts of the state where it rains a lot, these grasses can become a problem as weeds start to invade. They stay green as long as they have moisture. When it dries out, they turn brown and a lot of folks over water them trying to keep them green. If you plant a buffalo, let it go into its summer dormancy and you’ll be taking the best attributes of that grass and putting them to work for you. With you’re common sense tip for all the choices for Texas lawns, I’m Skip Richter. download
