Transcript: CompostOften when folks go out to put in a new landscape or garden, they find that the soil in their lot isn't that great. Perhaps it's a heavy clay, and it doen't drain well: there's not good aeration for the roots to thrive. Maybe it's a sandy soil and it drains too well, becoming very droughty: doesn't want to hold nutrients and you're watering and fertilizing a lot to keep the plants happy. You know, the solution to all our soil problems is compost. If you'll mix some compost into a clay soil, it will loosen it up and allow it to drain better. If you mix compost into a sand, it helps it hold moisture and nutrients but still drain quite well. Compost is decomposing organic matter, and you can purchase it in small bags, but it's usually better to purchase a large quanity and have it delivered to your place so you can mix it in to improve the soil, whether you're building up a raised bed, preparing a vegetable garden, or anything you're going to do where you're going to plant around your landscape. When you find that compost works well, you'll find that a little bit isn't enough. You'll want more and more and more! You know, with fall planting season coming, it really makes sense to spend a dollar on your soil before you spend a dollar on your plants. It will save you money in the long run. download
