Transcript: Fall Planting

Fall is the best planting season that we have. A lot of gardeners get spring fever in the spring and want to go out and plant, but true gardeners understand the advantages of fall planting. Little plants like this get a much better start when you put them in in the fall and you’ll be well-ahead on next year.

For example, you take a little plant like this; put it into the ground and by spring, it will be equal to a spring-planted much larger plant. It’s a way of saving money. You can start with a smaller plant, and by summer--if this one was fall-planted and this one was spring-planted--you could hardly tell the difference between the two. It’s a great way to save money and stretch your gardening dollar.

Fall is also a good time to establish shrubs and trees. Their roots grow all through the winter, become very well established and ready for the hot summer weather that will arrive next year. In fact, if you plant these shrubs in the fall, your chance of losing them is much less than on spring-planted plants when they enter that first stressful summer season: another way fall planting can save you money.

With your commonsense tip on the advantages of fall planting, I’m Skip Richter.
